Spreading the Word About Negative Pressure Therapy
Did you know Dr. Chariker helped develop a new way of treating hard to heal wounds? Often called the “Chariker-Jeter” method, it uses negative pressure from a vacuum suction device to help difficult wounds heal more quickly.
Dr. Chariker is part of a panel of doctors called the “NPWT (Negative Pressure Wound Therapy) Experts” that is traveling the world to help teach other physicians how to use the therapy. He just recently spoke to audiences in Atlanta, Germany and Portugal.
“Hard to heal wounds are a lot more common than people think. We see them a lot with car crashes or accidents where the wounds are very severe. But we also see them in diabetics, bedbound patients, burn victims, and a whole host of other circumstances,” Dr. Chariker said. “For some of these patients, they’ve gone for weeks or months with a wound that just will not close. Negative pressure wound therapy is creating great outcomes for patients who may not have had many other options,” he added.
Negative pressure wound therapy works because the suction helps blood, nutrients and antibodies get to the wound’s surface more quickly and evenly. It creates a seal that keeps out bacteria and contaminants, too. Patients who use this often cut their healing time by as much as a third.
